Ayaan Olasewere

WESTPORT — A Staples High School senior, a competitive athlete, student journalist and town Youth Commission member, is one of 105 students selected to receive a 2025 Horatio Alger National Scholarship.

Ayaan Olasewere has been selected to receive a $25,000 college scholarship by the nonprofit Horatio Alger Association, whose mission is “promoting and ensuring the American Dream for future generations,” the group said in a statement Wednesday. She is one of only three students in Connecticut to receive a scholarship this year.

The Horatio Alger scholarships are awarded to “exceptional students” who, despite challenges, “remain committed to pursuing higher education,” according to the statement. In addition to the $25,000 award, the scholarship program makes additional assistance available to recipients, such as financial aid counseling, college admission guidance and mentoring.

Olasewere has been swimming competitively since she and her twin sister Annam became 7-year-old members of the Water Rat team at the Westport Weston Family YMCA.

She also is the Staples “Inklings” web features editor, who wants to highlight “a lot of the interesting things and events and issues happening in our community,” according to her profile on the website.

In addition, Olasewere is one of the student representatives on the town’s Youth Commission.
