WESTPORT — The deluge from Tropical Storm Ida delayed opening of Westport’s public schools Thursday morning by two hours.

Shortly before 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Supt. of Schools Thomas Scarise said that, after assessing conditions at all of the school buildings, the delayed opening would go forward,

School buses will also follow their usual routes on a two-hour delay.

Scarise, in his second update to the school community Thursday morning, said that storm water had been found in several buildings.

The “water incursion [occurred] for a variety of reasons and we are working to determine the sources so that they can be addressed,” Scarise reported.

Some school offices and areas will be “offline for a short period of time,” he said.

“In some cases, the water entered the schools as a result of ground penetration, and in other cases, the roof drains were simply inundated with an unprecedented volume of water in a short period of time,” according to the announcement. “In any case, we are working to address the areas so that they are treated appropriately.”

The superintendent added that principals of the affected schools will update their respective school communities with more specifics about the impact of the water damage.
