WESTPORT — Spring officially is a week and a day away, so winter decided Saturday to let southern Connecticut know that, for now, it still is calling the weather shots.

A dreary day from the start, Saturday is expected to grow progressively worse.

Westport and the rest of the region are under a “Winter Weather Advisory” until 7 p.m., with this morning’s cold rain mixing with, and then changing, to snow later this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Accumulations could be up to 2 inches, the NWS predicts.

For extra wintry measure, the weather service also has issued a “Wind Advisory” until 4 a.m. Sunday — two hours after the start of Daylight Saving Time — with winds from 20 to 25 mph, gusting as high as 50 mph.

Driving conditions this afternoon could be hazardous, the NWS warns.

Temperatures also will plunge to solidly winter levels through the day, from the low-40s this morning to well below freezing overnight at about 20 degrees.

Skies are expected to clear Sunday morning as the storm front moves away, with temperatures rising to a high in the mid-30s under generally sunny conditions most of the day.

The Monday outlook is spring-like, as temperatures rise to about 50 degrees under sunny skies.

  • Saturday, however, in anticipation of deteriorating weather conditions during the afternoon, the Westport Library has announced that it will close early at 2 p.m.
