WESTPORT–Westport’s “Mr. Pickleball,” Tom Lowrie, was honored Saturday with the dedication of the “Lowrie Courts.”

Mr. Lowrie, aged 97, has been a persistent town-wide advocate for the sport for many years. His enthusiasm for the sport, the graciousness of his appeals and his warm spirit were all on display at the dedication. His steadfast advocacy had led to the growth of the Westport Pickleball Association to more than 700 members.

In June, the Parks and Rec Department and Board of Selectwomen unanimously voted to honor Lowrie with the naming of the popular Compo Beach courts.

Scores of Westporters joined the celebration, including:

  • RTM member Andrew Colabella, who, with fellow RTM member Chris Tait, spearheaded the dedication efforts.
  • Former member of the Board of Selectman, Board of Finance and RTM and former Chairman of the Parks and Rec Department Charlie Haberstroh lauded Mr. Lowrie.
  • The Y’s Men of Westport / Weston were represented by past presidents Baxter Urist and Bruce Borner.
  • The Parks and Rec Commission was represented by Chairman David Floyd.
  • Rob Hauck represented the Westport Sunrise Rotary Club.
