WESTPORT — How green does your garden grow?
If your patch is particularly productive, yielding tons of tomatoes and zillions of zucchini, consider donating that extra produce to the “Grow-a-Row Westport” program, which distributes fruits and vegetables to Fairfield County people in need.
Grow-a-Row Westport was organized in 2020 at the Westport Community Gardens to supply fresh produce to area agencies helping people who need food.
Produce to support the program also now is being collected weekly at the Westport Farmers Market, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays in the parking lot at 50 Imperial Ave.
The donated produce will be picked up and delivered by Food Rescue US/Fairfield County volunteers. Recipients include the Westport Housing Authority, Bridgeport FEED Center, Fridgeport and Career Resources CT.
The Grow-a-Row Westport mission “aligns with ours and we were blown away by the initial response,” Lori Cochran-Dougall, executive director of Westport Farmers Market, said in a publicity statement. “Collecting tons of fresh, local produce grown by our community of shoppers for the greater Fairfield County community in need is plain awesome.”
