NORWALK — The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk will resume its winter wildlife cruises this weekend, giving guests a chance to spot unique animals that make this region their home for the winter.

The first of the aquarium’s Seal-Spotting and Birding Cruises will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10th. The cruises will continue most weekends through March.

The two-hour cruises will take place on the R/V Sound Explorer, a research vessel that was added to the aquarium’s fleet in 2025. Each trip is timed to the low tide to give passengers a better chance to spot seals, and will travel by the low-lying rocks surrounding the Norwalk Islands.

Several species migrate from Maine and Canada to Long Island Sound during the winter in search of warmer temperatures and food. Harbor and grey seals make this journey around November or December, and are best visible when they haul themselves up onto rocks at low tide to rest.

A number of waterfowl also migrate during this season, including buffleheads, mergansers, long-tailed ducks, and loons.

“People are always amazed to learn that seals and these incredible birds are right here in our backyard,” said Captain Nicki Rosenfeld, director of vessel operations and programs at The Maritime Aquarium. “It’s like a winter safari on the Sound — an unforgettable experience to see these animals in their natural environment.”

Aquarium educators will be on board the Sound Explorer to help passengers spot and identify animals, and to share insights on the different species. Binoculars are provided, but guests are welcome to bring their own. Cameras are also permitted.

Tickets are $49.95, or $44.95 for members of The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. Cruises depart from the aquarium’s dock at 90 Water Street, a brief walk from the aquarium’s main entrance.
