WESTPORT — A 95-year-old woman who survived imprisonment in a Nazi concentration camp will share her personal story of survival and resilience in a Jan. 10 program hosted by Chabad of Westport.

Esther Basch, at 16 years old imprisoned at Auschwitz, will speak at the next “Critical Conversations” program, set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Chabad, 79 Newtown Turnpike. It will be preceded by a “VIP” reception at 6:45 p.m.

Transported in 1944 to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, Basch was assigned to work in a munitions factory, and later forced by her Nazi captors to march to the Salzwedel concentration camp, where she was liberated by American soldiers three days later in April 1945.

Basch became known as the “Honey Girl of Auschwitz” because after the malnourished teen was liberated from the camp, while searching for food, she found a jar of honey and consumed all of it, which made her ill.

Her experiences surviving Nazi persecution and her longtime campaign to promote “forgiveness, loving humankind and living life to the fullest,” is the subject of a documentary, “Honey Girl: A Journey of Forgiveness.”

The Chabad program, according to organizers, will give attendees an “opportunity for the community to meet Esther Basch and hear firsthand about her journey of survival and rebuilding against all odds.”
