WESTPORT — Acrostic poems are the theme of this year’s poetry contest sponsored by the Wheels2U Westport shuttle bus service.

An acrostic poem is one where the first letter of each line, vertically, spells out a word or name. And, for this contest, the acrostic prompt is: Wheels2U.

An example of an acrostic poem — at right — was provided by Westport Transit District officials in announcing the contest:

Entries in the contest, open to all Westport residents, will be accepted through March 30, and should be emailed to Peter Gold, a transit district director, at pgold@westportct.gov. “Acrostic Contest” should appear in the email’s subject line, and entries should include the writer’s name, address and email address.

There is no limit on the number of poems that a person can submit for the contest. Winners will be selected by Diane Meyer Lowman, Westport poet laureate emeritus, and Karina Betfarhad and Gold, the transit district’s co-directors.

Entries become the property of the Westport Transit District, according to the contest rules. Entrants give the agency permission to use their poems without compensation to promote the transit district services, contest organizers said.

The Wheels2U Westport shuttle buses provide on-demand rides from local homes to the town’s two railroad stations on weekday mornings, and back home from the depots in the afternoon and evenings. The Westport Transit District also offers door-to-door rides programs for the elderly and people with disabilities.
