WESTPORT–The Registrar of Voters invites the public to observe the testing of Westport’s new vote tabulators on Oct. 6.
Made by the Election Systems & Software company, the Registrar will test both models to be used by the town for the 2025 election, the DS300 and the DS450. According to Maria Louise Signore, Registrar of Voters, this is the first year these models will be used by Westport.
According to Signore, “the test entails running 17 ballots through the machines.” Signore added, “of the 17 test ballots, 15 are ‘electable’ ballots . . . they have been filled out properly–with blue Bic pens”.
The other two ballots have been filled out improperly; one has no oval boxes filled in and the other has all the oval boxes filled in.
The test determines if the tabulators tabulate the votes correctly. Observers can see with their own eyes and tally the ovals that are filled in in the “electable” ballots. Observers can compare their own tallies with the one tabulated by the machines.
Also new to the Registrar this year are flash media or “thumb” drives. The flash media drives will be used to transfer data on each candidate and each race from the Registrar’s computer to the voting machines. This process will be tested as well.
