WESTPORT–A Brooklyn man and his partner, accused of stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise from Lululemon in downtown Westport, apparently loved the store so much they just had to go back, according to police records.
The police charged Tyrique Howard, 24, with shoplifting at the store with a partner twice – on July 15 and July 21. Westport police arrested Howard on Sept. 24 after being contacted by authorities in Bergen County, N.J. He was in custody on an unrelated incident.
The second Lululemon larcenist remains at large.
In both Westport cases, staff of the clothing store at 69 Main St., “reported that they had observed two males enter and quickly begin to fill large bags with assorted merchandise,” Westport police said in an announcement. The thieves left with the merchandise without paying both times, the staff told police.
The store confirmed to police that merchandise worth $2,940 was taken in the first theft and $4,410 worth of items was taken in the second. In each case, however, the staff said they suspected the actual amount stolen was higher, police said.
Surveillance videos captured both incidents. After the first theft, police investigated further and shared information with other law enforcement agencies probing similar crimes, ultimately identifying Tyrique Howard as a suspect. The police sought and received an arrest warrant.
Video of the second incident appeared to show the same suspects, police said.
Howard was charged with two counts each of third-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny. He is being held on $50,000 bail and is next due in state court in Stamford on Nov. 17, court records show.
