WESTPORT — Staples High standout quarterback Caleb Smith, coming off a state championship run with the football team, has announced plans to continue his athletic and academic career at the University of Connecticut.

“I’m stoked. This is really a dream come true,” the senior said following the Staples basketball team’s win over Wilton on Tuesday.

Smith — selected in December as the MaxPreps’ Connecticut football player of the year — has been sidelined with an injury suffered in the football championship, but has been on hand supporting his basketball teammates throughout the winter campaign.

The QB said he looks forward to the challenges of competing and learning at the next level. He will enter the School of Business at UConn.

“I am beyond blessed and excited to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Connecticut! I want to thank God, my family, coaches and teammates who have helped me in my journey! Go Huskies!” Smith wrote in a social media statement.
