WESTPORT — Henri, whose intensity here fell short of forecasts, by 5 p.m. Sunday no longer carried “tropical storm” and “storm surge” warnings for the town issued earlier by the National Weather Service.

Despite cancellation of severe weather warnings, rain overnight and most of Monday has triggered an NWS “flood watch” for Westport through Monday night.

Henri, downgraded earlier Sunday from a Category 1 hurricane, shifted east from initial forecasts that put Connecticut squarely in its path.

Westport and most of southwestern Connecticut were spared Henri’s wrath when the storm’s center made landfall in Rhode Island late Sunday morning. The storm, although weakened, inundated southern Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut.

Shifting again, Henri followed a slow, northwesterly path bringing tropical-storm-like conditions to central and northern sections of Connecticut. Later, the storm was expected to change course again and head toward the coasts of New Hampshire and Maine.

Westport emergency operations center closed

Westport’s emergency operations center was closed at 4:30 p.m. Sunday after officials said the anticipated severe impact of Henri had passed.

“While we will continue to see rain and winds, the overnight storm impacts to Westport are expected to be less serious than previously projected,” First Selectman Jim Marpe said in a statement. “Unrelated to Hurricane Henri, thunderstorms are expected throughout Connecticut tomorrow.

“I want to thank our residents and businesses for heeding the instructions to remain at home and prepare for what could’ve been a major situation,” he added. “I hope that for many Westporters, today was a day well spent with family, or at least a chance to test and improve your emergency preparedness.”

As of 6 p.m. Sunday, the power utility Eversource reported no power outages in Westport.

Westport forecast: More rain, then hot and humid

The Westport area forecast for tonight calls for continued rain, sometimes heavy, with the potential for thunderstorms.

More rain, with thunderstorms again possible, are expected for most of Monday, with the chances of precipitation diminishing at night. High temperature is expected to be about 80 degrees.

After inclement weather clears from southwestern Connecticut by Tuesday morning, according to the NWS, the weather is expected to turn fairly sunny, with hot and humid temperatures in the mid- to high-80s through Friday.
