WESTPORT — The New Year marked the start of FCIAC play for the Staples boys basketball team, but there’s nothing new about their continued success.
On Friday, the Wreckers notched their fifth victory of the season without a loss, defeating New Canaan 47-37 at home.
Sam Clachko dropped in 20 points to lead the way. Adam Udell scored 10, Mason Tobias contributed eight and Matthew Corrigan tacked on six.
The Wreckers led 14-6 after one quarter of play. The Rams hung in there, pulling to within 19-15 at halftime. Staples established a 32-23 lead heading to the fourth.
The Wreckers were held to their lowest point total of the season so far, but also surrendered the fewest points scored by an opponent.
Staples heads to Brien McMahon of Norwalk on Tuesday, and visits the Norwalk High Bears on Thursday. The next home tilt is Tuesday, Jan. 14, when Stamford High comes to town. Each of these matchups is slated to tip off at 7 p.m. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest CIAC updates.)
