WESTPORT–In a battle of unbeaten FCIAC rivals, visiting Wilton set the tone early on the way to a 41-7 win over Staples’ football team on Friday night.

The Warriors blocked a field goal attempt and went on to score the first touchdown for a 7-0 lead they carried into the second quarter.

Wilton scored twice in the second, the final TD of the opening half coming after an interception in Staples territory as the Warriors built a 21-0 lead at the break.

Staples tried to gain some momentum late in the first half. Quarterback Nick Weil completed a third down pass to Charlie Clark and Weil moved the chains on a third down rush to keep a drive alive. Chaz Darby had some hard-fought runs against Wilton’s tough defense. The Wreckers attempted a pass play on fourth and four at the Wilton 15 but the ball was deflected in the end zone and fell incomplete in the waning seconds of the second quarter.

Things did not get better in the second half. Wilton pulled ahead 28-0 before the Wreckers finally got on the board. Wilton improved to 5-0 and Staples fell to 4-1.

After dominating the competition most weeks with stellar play in all facets of the game the Wreckers got a taste of their own medicine in a rare defeat, much less a lopsided setback.

The Wreckers have a bye this week and are back in action Friday, Oct. 24, with a visit to Fairfield Warde at 5 p.m.
