MILFORD — The Staples High hockey team made things interesting Saturday, but fell 4-3 to Trumbull at Milford Ice Pavilion.

The Eagles had beaten the Wreckers 6-1 earlier in the season and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the rematch before

Staples sprung to life, twice pulling to within a goal.

Down 2-0 after one period and 3-0 in the second, the Wreckers got on the board on a Carter Fass unassisted tally. It was 3-1 headed to the third.

Tyler DiMaio, assisted by Jameson Russell and Nikos Ninios, got Staples within 3-2. Trumbull’s Jacques Roy netted his second of the game for a 4-2 lead. Cooper Paul, set up by DiMaio and Russell, again pulled the Wreckers within one. Trumbull’s Nikolas Smagacz had two tallies.

Staples outshot Trumbull 30-23. Wreckers’ goaltender Aaron Kail made 19 saves.
