WESTPORT — Got a clunker that needs to junked? A heap you plan to heave?
Westport firefighters to the rescue.
In this case, the Fire Department is offering to take an unwanted vehicle off your hands and use it for a good cause: fire training.
Local firefighters were dispatched to the scene of more than 225 motor vehicle accidents last year, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page.
And vehicles donated to the agency help firefighters sharpen their response to accidents, where they frequently are confronted by fire and extrication emergencies.
Moreover, the donation very likely is tax-deductible.
The cars “are used to practice vehicle stabilization and extrication, the process of gaining access to a victim who is trapped inside a vehicle,” Assistant Fire Chief Brett Kirby said in the post.
“This happens more often than people realize and being able to remove an occupant quickly and safely is critical to a successful outcome. Our firefighters are consistently honing their rescue skills, but we need the cars and SUVs for them to train on,” he added.
“The knowledge gained through this hands-on training is critical to enable us to provide the best possible service to our residents and visitors.”
Donated vehicles regardless of age and in “almost any condition” will be picked up by the Fire Department, according to the post.
