
WESTPORT–The Wreckers 2021 football season began Friday with a dramatic and emotional win over Trumbull and the Wreckers former coach, Marce Petroccio.
Trumbull was threatening to break the 20-20 tie with 15 seconds on the clock when Charlie Howard intercepted an overthrown and tipped pass. Deft Wreckers defense helped Howard return the interception 73 yards to the Eagles end zone and the dramatic win.
Staples led 20-6 late in the third quarter, but gave up two Eagle touchdowns and the lead by the middle of the fourth quarter.
Wreckers QB Ryan Thompson threw for two touchdowns and nearly 300 yards.
The Wreckers’ next game is Friday at home under the lights against St. Joseph. Kickoff is 7:00 p.m.
