FAIRFIELD — Coming off a 5-2 win over visiting Trumbull last Thursday, the Staples boys tennis team hit the courts Saturday to resume a match against Fairfield Warde previously halted by rain — and continued their winning ways.

Staples prevailed 6-1 and improved to 11-2 overall heading into Monday’s 4 p.m. home match with Danbury.

In the win over Trumbull, No. 3 singles player Alex Cozzolino defeated Peter Bahr 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 and No. 4 player Kieran Anand beat Andre Esperitu 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles play, the top tandem of Mattie Guadarrama/Hayden Frey defeated Neel Jakka/Johnnie Iacci 6-0, 6-0; No. 2 Jared Even/Clint Graham got past Josh Jacob/Jackson Sanderson 6-7, 7-6, 10-8, and No. 3 Aleko Vergakis/Shreyas Gorre defeated Rithik Gunda/Jason Orlick 6-3, 6-4

Against Warde, No. 1 player Noah Wolff defeated Rohan Quarve 6-0, 6-1; No. 2 Brett Lampert beat Matt Perman 6-0, 6-1; No. 3 Vergakis defeated Will Bentley 6-1, 3-6, 6-2

On the doubles courts, Staples picked up three more victories. Guadarrama/Frey beat Tyler Feinstein/Culm Johnston 6-0, 6-1; Even/Graham defeated Jonah Amster/Pranav Quarve 2-6, 6-1, 10-7, and Robert Jacob/Anand beat Ellis/Ben Feinstein 6-1, 2-0 (retired).

The Wreckers, following Monday’s match with Danbury, are scheduled to visit St. Joseph of Trumbull on Tuesday and Westhill of Stamford on Thursday, both at 4 p.m. The originally scheduled season opener at Avon has now tentatively been rescheduled to 11 a.m. Saturday at Staples. After that, the team moves on to the postseason.
