WESTPORT — Westport Country Playhouse, marking a new phase of its year-long transformation project, returns to its theatrical roots this fall with three productions billed as “A Season of Laughter.”

Theater officials, after launching an aggressive $2 million fundraising campaign last spring to stave off what they warned could be its imminent closure, later announced its programming would be “reimagined.”

Toward that goal, officials planned a slate of programs designed to appeal beyond the theatrical productions traditionally showcased from the playhouse’s 1931 founding.

Since the start of this year, the playhouse has functioned as “a performing arts center,” featuring single-night events, including cabaret, comedy, music, play-readings and speakers.

With its 94th season beginning in October, the theater plans three plays, each staged over a three-week run, and two other productions with shorter runs.

The three playhouse-produced plays include:

“The 39 Steps,” Oct. 22-Nov. 9, described in playhouse publicity as “a fast-paced frenzy of espionage and murderous mayhem.”

“Native Gardens,” Feb. 18-March 8, a comedy in which “bad behavior reigns as two sets of well-intentioned neighbors become feuding enemies in a backyard battle for the ages,” according to the publicity.

“Theatre People,” March 25-April 12, which the playhouse says is “a throwback to the classic screwball comedies of yesteryear.”

Additionally, “A Sherlock Carol” will be staged Dec. 17-22, and “Broadway Scores at the Playhouse” is set for Jan. 23-26.

“I’ve put together a slate of comedies, chosen specifically to energize our community with a welcoming sense of warmth, joy and humor,” Mark Shanahan, the playhouse artistic director, said in publicity for “A Season of Laughter.”

“From family friendly plays to old-fashioned romps, to biting and topical humor, there’s something for everyone to enjoy,” he added.
