WESTPORT — A man deposited a check stolen from a local USPS in his New York bank after its value was increased by thousands of dollars, police said.
Fernando Garcia, 28, of Bronx, N.Y., was charged April 26 with first-degree identity theft.
Police received a complaint July 26, 2023, from a person who reported that a check for $36.91 placed in a local U.S. Postal Service mailbox apparently was stolen and later deposited in an unrecognized bank account.
The fraudulently deposited check’s value was changed to $6,000, the complainant told police.
Using video-surveillance recordings and information shared with other law-enforcement agencies, Fernando Garcia was identified as the suspect who deposited the altered check in a bank account via an ATM in the Bronx, according to the report.
A warrant for Garcia’s arrest was issued and he turned himself in April 26 at Police Department headquarters. He was released after posting $50,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned May 17 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
