WESTPORT — The Staples High boys lacrosse team shook off its first loss of the campaign with a thrilling overtime victory, and followed that with a Senior Night barrage of scoring as several Wreckers logged their first varsity goals.

The Wreckers continued their season-starting winning ways, following up a 13-11 comeback effort to beat Darien on April 15, with a 10-8 victory over Bergen Catholic of New Jersey on the road April 18.

Gavin Rothenberg netted four goals and Tyler Clark had two tallies and a trio of assists. Adam Udell and Will Fleming both had a goal and an assist. Goaltender Scott Kosakowski made 10 saves.

The Wreckers, after a 6-0 start, fell 6-4 at FCIAC rival Wilton on April 20. Ben Burmeister notched two goals and Rothenberg and Sam Eigen both recorded a goal and an assist. Kosakowski made nine saves.

Staples then went out of state to take on Bishop Guertin of New Hampshire, at Providence College, and came away with an 11-10overtime victory. Rothenberg, who netted three goals, scored with just 44 seconds left in regulation to tie the game. Burmeister scored the winning goal after Michael Nealon had a takeaway check to give the Wreckers possession. Kosakowski made eight saves.

Clark had two goals and two assists, Udell had three assists, Burmeister logged two goals and one assist, and Cam Prior had two net-finders. Eigen and Nealon both added goals. Nealon, through Staples’ first eight games, compiled six goals, one assist, 26 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers.

On Monday, Staples crushed visiting Trumbull, 19-2, on Senior Night.

Six Wreckers logged their first career goals: Senior Aaron Kail (one goal, one assist), along with seniors Cam Lyons and Alex Hilton, juniors Ryan Cirasuolo and Alex Fiala, and sophomore Jack Knesich.

Clark had two goals and two assists, Charlie Iannone scored three times, Burmeister had two goals and one assist and Rothenberg added a goal and an assist. Nealon, Prior, Max Maurillo and Ben Rimm also found the back of the net.

Staples gets back to non-conference competition at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when St. Anthony’s of New York visits.
