WESTPORT — The first day of classes for Westport’s public schools is Tuesday, Aug. 30.
To mark the date, police are underscoring their own ABCs … (It’s) Academic Be Careful.
A Westport police statement issued this week says officers will be stepping up safety enforcement and education — for both pedestrians and drivers — around school zones.
Of particular concern, police said, are drivers talking on cell phones, exceeding posted speed limits or ignoring school bus signals.
Police are “committed to protecting children from motorists who disregard Connecticut’s traffic safety laws, especially around school zones and bus stops where students congregate,” the statement says.
Commuters are advised to allow for extra time due to school buses making frequent stops to pick up students.
Drivers also should show extra caution because of the higher numbers of youngsters walking to schools and crossing streets, police said.
The Police Department has posted a comprehensive list of safety tips for drivers, parents and students, which can be read by clicking here.
