WESTPORT — A New York woman broke into a Wakenor Road home early last Saturday, startling the sleeping resident, police said.

Viviana Hernandez, 54, of New York City, N.Y., was charged with first-degree burglary in connection with the Nov. 4 incident.

Police were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report that a burglary was in progress shortly after 5 a.m. Nov. 4, at a Wakenor Road home. The resident reported being awakened by rummaging sounds in the home’s kitchen, where a female intruder was encountered. The startled resident screamed, causing the suspect to flee from the home, police said.

The officer arriving at the scene found a woman, matching a description of the intruder, standing in the street in front of the complainant’s home.

After the resident confirmed to police that the suspect — identified as Hernandez — was the person who entered the house, she was taken into custody and charged.

Hernandez was released after posting $5,000 bond, and is scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 15 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
