WESTPORT — A 44-year-old man, who police said was intoxicated and tried to punch a pedestrian downtown without provocation, also fought with officers attempting to take him into custody, police said.

Henrique Tofani, of Westport, was charged Nov. 11 with second-degree breach of peace and interfering with an officer.

Police were dispatched Oct. 8 to investigate the report of a disturbance on Main Street, where a pedestrian told officers that a man also walking on the sidewalk threw a punch for no reason.

The suspect — identified by police Henrique Tofani — was located a short time later, and according to the report, “was allegedly intoxicated and began fighting with officers who were trying to speak with him about the incident.”

The complainant identified Tofani as the man who, without cause, threw a punch at their face, but missed.

Because of Tofani’s “level of intoxication,” he was transported to a hospital and not immediately charged, police said.

A warrant for Tofani’s arrest was issued, and he was taken into custody at his home and formally charged. He was released after posting $1,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 9 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
