TRUMBULL — The Staples High football team improved to 8-1 with a 28-0 win at Trumbull on Friday night.

Quarterback Nick Weil completed 17 of 28 pass attempts for 275 yards and threw three touchdown passes. Weil also carried the ball six times for 29 yards.

Nathan Smith caught seven passes for 111 yards and had a TD, Shane Sandrew had eight catches for 159 and a TD, and Justin Halky scored a receiving touchdown.

Anthony Armentano rushed 16 times for 87 yards and Kody Goldman had a rushing touchdown.

The Wreckers will host Greenwich (8-1 after crushing Westhill of Stamford 42-0 on Saturday) in the annual Thanksgiving Day game — kickoff is at 10 a.m. Nov. 28. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest updates.)

Greenwich is the top-ranked team in the Class LL State rankings and Staples is third, behind No. 2 Fairfield Prep (also 8-1 but with more strength-of-schedule points). Prep plays No. 4 West Haven on Turkey Day.

The Thanksgiving matchup could determine the state’s top seed, and even whether Staples earns a first-round playoff home game awarded to the top four teams.
