WESTPORT — The two pedestrians struck and critically injured by an SUV while walking together on an Imperial Avenue sidewalk Aug. 7 have both been released from the hospital.
The pedestrians — a 33-year-old Easton man and a 29-year-old Fairfield woman — “both have a very good prognosis” to recover from their injuries, according to police Lt. Eric Woods.
While the police investigation continues into the accident — which occurred about 6:45 p.m. Aug. 7 near Imperial Avenue’s intersection with Post Road East — indications are that the driver may have “had a medical event prior to the crash, which then caused the crash,” Woods said.
A woman who witnessed the incident told the Westport Journal the black Mercedes SUV that hit the couple appeared to have stopped on Imperial Avenue, tying up traffic, and then suddenly surged forward.
Investigators are “fairly confident that alcohol/drugs were not a contributing factor,” but have secured search warrants to help make a final determination about the accident’s cause, Woods added.
No charges have been issued so far in connection with the incident.
The probe is being carried out by the Police Department’s accident investigation team, assisted by the detective bureau.

Thank you for this update. So grateful these two young people are recovering with good prognoses.
