WESTPORT–When Bridgeport resident Steven Klein was pulled over for allegedly running a stop sign, he made things worse for himself, police say, by giving his brother’s name as his own.

But that was neither the end, nor the beginning of legal troubles for the 28-year-old, who has been charged repeatedly with assault and other crimes in Easton and Bridgeport, records show.

The Westport stop occurred at Greens Farm and Hillspoint roads on June 9 about 9:30 p.m. The allegedly fake identification Klein gave came to light when his brother visited the Westport Police Department on July 10 to report that he had been notified of an outstanding citation erroneously charging him with a motor vehicle infraction. He told police he suspected that his brother had given his name and other information when police stopped him.

“Investigation revealed that Steven Klein was the operator during the motor vehicle stop in question and computer checks showed his operator’s license to be revoked,” police said in an announcement.

A warrant issued for Klein’s arrest was flagged on Sept. 17 when Klein appeared in Superior Court in Bridgeport on charges of crimes in Bridgeport and Easton that included assault and reckless endangerment.

Westport police brought him to police headquarters, where he was charged with criminal impersonation and interfering with an officer, both misdemeanors, as well as failure to obey a stop sign and operation of a motor vehicle without a license. Bail was set at $2,500 and Klein was released after paying seven percent of the amount in cash. He is due in Superior Court in Stamford on Oct. 2.

Klein had first been arrested in Easton on May 16, 2024 on a reckless driving charge, and added two charges of failure to appear in court on June 20 and August 28.

On July 4, he was arrested in Easton and charged with second-degree criminal mischief.

He was again arrested in Bridgeport on July 29 and charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and interfering with an officer, a misdemeanor. He was also charged with three crimes stemming from a July 3 incident – third-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct, all misdemeanors.

He has pleaded guilty on the two assault charges and the endangerment charge, court records show. He is next due in court Oct. 29 on the charges from Easton and Bridgeport.
