Greens Farms Elementary School on Morningside Drive South.

WESTPORT — Police were dispatched to Greens Farms Elementary School after a texted threat mentioning the school — “swatting” others around the state as well — was received Friday afternoon.

The threat, which police said was reported about 1:15 p.m. Friday through the Veterans Suicide Hotline, prompted an immediate investigation at the Morningside Drive South school, which “quickly determined that the threat was not valid,” according to the report.

The school was ordered to “shelter in place” until police officials gave clearance to proceed with the usual school schedule, Supt. of Schools Thomas Scarice said in an emailed statement.

After learning about the threat, Scarice said he went to the school, where six officers were already on the scene.

Officials said the Greens Farms threat, mirrored in threats against other schools and agencies across the state, appeared to be a “swatting” incident, which are false reports designed to prompt a needless response by emergency services.

Nonetheless, as a precaution, police officers were stationed at all Westport schools until classes were dismissed Friday afternoon.

Swatting, police said in a statement released Friday afternoon, “not only diverts critical emergency resources, but also causes unnecessary fear and anxiety within the community.”

Scarice thanked police “for their rapid response, and I want to thank the administration and faculty of GFS for their responsive actions.”
