WESTPORT — A second New Haven 18-year-old was arrested Friday on a long list of charges in connection with the carjacking that left a 64-year-old Uber Eats driver seriously injured last Saturday night.

Tayvion Hart, who was apprehended Friday morning, is believed to be the suspect who stole the female delivery driver’s white Hyundai while she was picking up a takeout order at Golden Pizza in the Westfair Shopping Center on Post Road East, police said.

Three other suspects — Giovanni Abreu, 18, of New Haven, and two juveniles — were arrested Saturday night after police said they fled the scene of the assault in a separate, stolen car and crashed in Bridgeport after a police pursuit.

Hart’s arrest, according to the Friday update on the incident was the result of a coordinated investigation by several law-enforcement agencies, including Westport police, Bridgeport police, the Bridgeport Regional Auto Theft Task Force, New Haven police, Hamden police and the U.S. Marshals Service in New Haven.

After the Uber Eats driver suffered a serious head injury trying to prevent her car from being stolen, Hart allegedly fled the scene in the woman’s Hyundai, accompanied by the three other suspects in another car — a black Acura reported stolen in Hamden earlier in the day.

Both vehicles sped westward down Post Road East, and were spotted traveling together by a Westport patrol officer stationed on the Sherwood Island Connector.

Neither vehicle stopped when the officer attempted to pull them over, and instead headed onto Interstate 95 eastbound.

The officer chased them onto the highway, but eventually lost sight of the Hyundai. However, he continued to pursue the Acura, which left I-95 at Exit 29 in Bridgeport, where the driver lost control and crashed into an occupied vehicle and several parked cars, police said,

Abreu and the two juveniles were quickly apprehended after the accident by the Westport officer and Bridgeport police.

Hart was initially detained in New Haven, where police said he was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

When he is turned over to Westport police, authorities said he will be charged with first-degree robbery, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, first-degree assault on an elderly person, conspiracy to commit first-degree assault on an elderly person, first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny.

Hart’s bond for these charges is set at $250,000.

Police said although no more arrests are anticipated, the case remains under active investigation.

In a statement issued after Hart’s arrest, Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas repeated a warning to residents about the importance of locking vehicles.

“What initially began as individuals targeting unlocked vehicles in the overnight hours has evolved into the theft of unattended vehicles at all times of day and night, in some cases by way of force,” Koskinas said.

“We ask that you please remember to always lock your vehicle and take your keys with you, no matter what the circumstances.”
