WESTPORT — Sunny skies and clear breezes Thursday afternoon are embracing town in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Ida.
But be warned — and aware — because dangers still lurk, according to the town’s Emergency Management Team.
“After the storm, be extremely careful when going around your property or neighborhood to survey any damage. Stay away from any power lines and downed trees,” Deputy Fire Chief Michael Kronick said in the statement.
A “flood warning” posted for Westport by the National Weather Service remains in effect through 6:15 p.m. Thursday.
As of 2 p.m., 98 Westport customers still had no electrical service, according to Eversource.
As Ida slammed Westport, Kronick said, firefighters were dispatched to more than 40 calls between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. Thursday.
Calls included rescuing motorists trapped in vehicles stuck in rising water, flooded homes, downed power lines, burning power poles, transformer explosions, home electrical issues and other hazardous conditions, he said.
Roads throughout town were closed because of flooding or downed trees.
The emergency team offers this advice about lingering storm hazards:
- Stay well clear of downed power lines: 25’ at least.
- Be vigilant about downed trees and tree limbs hung up overhead.
- Make sure your house can be found quickly – street number posted at the end of the driveway.
- Do not drive through flooded areas.
