WESTPORT — A deer trapped in the iced-over Saugatuck River, just south of the Post Road downtown, was rescued and set free by firefighters early Thursday.

A caller to the Fairfield County Regional Dispatch Center reported that a deer was stuck in the ice shortly after 6:45 a.m. Thursday, according to a report by Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Gootman.

The Fire Department dispatched an engine, rescue team, safety officer and shift commander to the scene, where they found the animal struggling in the frozen river, not far south of the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge.

Two rescue team members, wearing cold-water gear, launched an inflatable vessel onto the river surface to approach the deer, pulled the animal from its entrapment and helped it navigate back to the riverbank.

After its rescue, the deer was able to walk on its own and head into nearby woods.

Once the deer was back on shore, it was able to walk from the scene into a nearby wooded area, according to Gootman.
