WESTPORT — The body of one of the New York men missing after a boat sank Sunday near Cockenoe Island was recovered Monday.
Westport police said the body of 38-year-old Juan Garbriel Valle Pineda of Spring Valley was recovered by a Bridgeport fire boat about 3 miles northeast of island. Police had been notified about the body about 4:30 p.m. and the Bridgeport vessel was the first to arrive.
The fire crew returned to Bridgeport Harbor where they were met by Westport police, state medical examiner’s personnel and victim’s family.
Westport police Lt. Eric Woods said Pineda’s body was taken to the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
“Westport police extend our sympathies to the family of the deceased and are hopeful of recovering the second missing person,” Woods said in a statement.
The search for the second victim was suspended at 9 p.m. Monday, police said.
Five people were aboard a small boat in choppy waters Sunday when it sank near Cockenoe. Three people were rescued.
The search, led by the Westport police marine unit, resumed at sunrise Monday after being suspended at 9 p.m. Sunday, according to police.
The sunken vessel was found about 9:30 a.m. Monday by Westport marine police near the navigational buoy, which one of the five passengers was found clinging to Sunday.
The small fishing boat was anchored off the south side of Cockenoe Island when it sank sometime after 9:30 a.m. Sunday, but police were not alerted to the incident until about 4 p.m. Sunday, according to reports.
A boater notified police about 4 p.m. Sunday that one man was found hanging onto a navigational buoy near the island, while another man and woman were pulled from the water nearby, Woods said.
The man still missing is from Suffern, N.Y.
The three people rescued Sunday were transported to a marina in Norwalk, and then to the hospital for treatment.
All three were released from the hospital Sunday night after evaluation.
Police, who said their investigation has been hampered by “a significant language barrier,” have been working with translators to assist their investigation.
Police ask that boaters who were in the Cockenoe Island area between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday contact them at 203-341-6000.
