Edward (Doug) Hyde Jr.

Following is the obituary for EDWARD (DOUG) HYDE Jr. submitted for his family by the Harding Funeral Home.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edward (Doug) Hyde Jr., a man of diverse talents and a life rich with experiences. Doug left this world on Oct. 18, 2023, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 85 years old.

Born and raised in Ridgefield to Edward Hyde and Mildred Rose Gaetano, Doug was a graduate of Fairfield Prep and the University of Detroit. He dedicated a portion of his life in service to the nation, as he proudly served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Doug’s professional journey began as a credit analyst at Grace Nation Bank in the bustling heart of New York City. He was not only a man of finance but also an entrepreneur. He became the proud owner of Hyde’s Wines and Liquors in Ridgefield, and later expanded his business ventures with the acquisition of Beacon Liquor Store in Westport. He also took on the role of manager at Depot Liquors, Westport, bringing his expertise to the world of spirits and libations.

In his personal life, Doug was blessed with a family that was his pride and joy. He was married to the love of his life, Joan Masnato, former town clerk of Westport, for 53 beautiful years. Together, they were long-term residents of Westport. 

Doug is survived by his loving wife, Joan, as well as an extended family that meant the world to him, including his beloved cat “Remy.”

He leaves behind his brothers, Brian Hyde of Winchester, Va., and Gary Hyde (companion, Christine Lamadrid) from Avon; his sister, Marilyn Gregory (William Gregory, dec’d) of Shelton, all a source of love and support throughout his life.

Doug had a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews, who brought him endless joy. Nieces Sara Hyde, Marybeth McAllister (John), Rena Hemmann (Tom), and nephews Paul Hyde (Annie), Jason Hyde (Jamie), Kenneth Hyde (Jen S.), William Gregory (Susanna) and Thomas Gregory. He was also a godfather to Sally Anastos (Tarsey) and many special cherished friends.

Doug had a zest for life, which manifested in his love for travel, a passion he shared with his beloved wife. He was an avid angler, finding solace and joy in fishing and boating, and as an amateur radio operator, he connected with the world through his airwaves. He also enjoyed reading historical novels and a great Stephen King novel. 

One of his greatest pleasures in life was cooking and entertaining. He was a culinary artist who reveled in preparing delicious meals, especially for holidays, with family and friends.

Doug touched the lives of many, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter and cherished memories. He will be remembered for his kindness, his dedication to his family, and his boundless enthusiasm for life.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at St. Pius X Parish, 834 Brookside Drive, Fairfield. Burial will be private. Condolences for the family may be left on line at www.hardingfuneral.com.

Let us remember Doug for the joy he brought into our lives and the love he shared with all of us. He will be deeply missed, but forever remembered. May he rest in peace.
