WESTPORT–The Westport Transit District announced over the weekend that all five of the candidates for Board of Selectman enthusiastically support the ride service. Melissa Levy, Chair of the RTM Transit Committee, produced and directed videos depicting each of the candidates as they use the service.
This support could be critical, as the Board of Finance blocked town funding earlier this year and in 2023 and 2022. In each of those budget battles, the RTM has overruled the Board of Finance.
Republican candidate Don O’Day said Wheels2U, “Is designed to really help reduce congestion and traffic in town.” His running mate, Andrea Moore said “it’s super easy to use!” Watch video.
Independent candidate David Rosenwaks said, “I really hope people start using the service more and more. . . . We can accomplish a lot of things with programs like Wheels2U.“ Watch video.
Democratic candidate Kevin Christie said, “With the stop at the library there’s so much access to the Levitt, Main Street and more.” Amy Wistreich, Christie’s running mate, mused about a little-known feature: “Do you know you can take this to go . . . to Saugatuck for dinner? I love this idea!” Watch video.
The RTM’s Levy said, “I believe in Wheels2U and its viability for expansion. Westport is so lucky to have this fantastic program.”
Peter Gold, Director of the Westport Transit District, said “I am grateful for the support for Wheels2U shown by all the candidates. No matter who wins the election, their support will allow Wheels2U to continue to grow and serve even more of Westport’s transit needs.”
Wheels2U operates to and from anywhere in Westport and the Saugatuck and Greens Farms train stations from 5:30 am to 10:30 am and from 4:00 pm to 9:30 pm Monday through Friday.
