WESTPORT — Plans to erect a cell tower on Greens Farms Road, where a similar proposal generated plenty of static seven years ago, are back in play.

Developers are seeking approval for the project at 92 Greens Farms Road, the same privately owned, 1.86-acre property where a controversial plan to build a cell tower was advanced, but later withdrawn, in 2014. The site is not far from Interstate 95 and Hillspoint Road.

Tarpon Towers II, LLC, and New Cingular Wireless PCS, LLC, otherwise AT&T, have notified the town they will proceed with plans to erect the  tower on the Greens Farms Road site, according to an announcement Friday from First Selectman Jim Marpe.

The application seeking a Certificate of Compatibility and Public Need from the Connecticut Siting Council is the first of several steps the developers are required to follow before final approval for the tower can be granted.

The notice follows an earlier historic preservation review process announced by the applicant in June, Marpe said.

“I am dismayed that this proposal for a cell tower installation at the same location that the town reviewed seven years ago has returned,” Marpe said in his statement.

“At that time, many raised numerous rational and thoughtful reasons why this location was inappropriate, and the proposal was dropped …   The town will also have an opportunity to propose alternative sites.”

Marpe added that the Planning and  Zoning and Conservation commissions will have opportunities to review and comment on the proposal.

After he has an initial meeting on the proposal with the developers’ lawyer, Marpe said, a public meeting where residents can comment will take place.

“I will keep the community informed throughout the process,” the first selectman said.
