NORWALK — Traffic began flowing shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday through the section of Interstate 95 where a fiery truck crash shut down the busy corridor early Thursday and gridlocked traffic throughout the region.

The emergency repairs, which included removing the Fairfield Avenue bridge spanning the highway, were completed a day ahead of initial forecasts.

The final work before Sunday’s reopening involved repaving all four southbound lanes in the area where the tanker truck caught fire. The highway’s northbound lanes had reopened Saturday night after removal of the bridge was completed earlier in the day.

Throughout the duration of I-95’s shutdown, Westport’s main east-west thoroughfares — the Post Road and the Merritt Parkway — were clogged with drivers seeking alternate routes around the accident site.

The tangle of car and truck traffic also spilled onto streets and roads through local neighborhoods, a phenomenon reflected in communities on both sides of the scene.

The bridge infrastructure was damaged when the tanker truck collided with another truck near southbound Exit 15 and burst into flames beneath the Fairfield Avenue bridge just before the start of the Thursday morning commute.

Despite the dramatic flames that engulfed the tanker truck, no serious injuries were reported.

In a statement announcing the highway’s reopening, Gov. Ned Lamont called completion of the emergency repairs an “amazing” accomplishment.

“From the response from local and state police and fire departments to the environmental cleanup by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the demolition and rebuilding by the Connecticut Department of Transportation and contractors, everyone did their part,” the governor said in the statement.

“I am impressed by these efforts and thankful for the dedication, skill and labor of everyone who has been involved.”
