WESTPORT — They’re 36 members strong; they represent nine Westport neighborhoods; they don’t declare political allegiances, and their heritage can be traced to American democracy’s foundational town meetings in the 1600s.

That’s Westport’s citizen assembly, the Representative Town Meeting. Serving as town government’s legislative body, the RTM has a final say on matters ranging from the town’s code of ordinances to the annual town budget.
Now, members of the RTM — which observed its 75th anniversary last year — are inviting fellow Westporters to a “Community Conversation” to discuss the body’s role and responsibilities.
The event is scheduled at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at the Westport Library, 20 Jesup Road,
In addition to meeting RTM members, the program will include a panel discussion of the body’s role in town government, as well as break-out groups for constituents to engage directly with the legislators.
Members of other elected boards and commissions are also expected to attend.
