WESTPORT — One hundred and 29 voters in Westport helped write a new chapter in the state’s electoral history Tuesday.
They were among the first voters across Connecticut who cast ballots in the state’s presidential preference primaries — also, the first-ever, early-voting day under an amendment approved to the state Constitution by voters in 2022. Before that, Connecticut was one of only four states to prohibit some form of voting in advance of a scheduled election.
While the actual primary day is Tuesday, April 2, four days of early voting commenced this Tuesday and will continue three more days prior to the designated date.
Only voters registered as Democrats and Republicans are eligible to turn out for the presidential preference primaries of their respective political parties.
Of the 129 Westport voters who cast ballots Tuesday, 105 were Democrats and 24 Republicans, according to Deborah Greenberg, the Democratic registrar of voters.
Results of the voting, however, won’t be known until after the polls close April 2, because all of the early ballots must remain sealed until then and will be counted along with primary day tabulations.
Regardless of the Connecticut primary results, outcome of the presidential nomination process has already been determined: Joe Biden and Donald Trump both have clinched enough support to be their parties’ nominees in the Nov. 5 general election.
The schedule for the remaining early-voting days follows:
- 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 27-28, in Room 201 of Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Ave.
- 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 30, in the Town Hall auditorium
- There will be no early voting on March 29, March 31 or April 1.
Voting on primary day — April 2 — will take place during the standard hours of 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., but ballots can be cast only at Town Hall’s auditorium and not the usual district polling stations.
