WESTPORT — The challenges of being a parent in the digital age will be explored in a Sept. 23 program hosted by Westport public schools and Westport Together.

“Parenting Screenagers: Tips for Success,” a program led by Dr. Delaney Ruston, physician and filmmaker who created the 2016 documentary, “Screenagers,” will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, in the Bedford Middle School auditorium, 88 North Ave.

Ruston, who has been a physician for 25 years, has focused for the last 12 years has focused on researching issues related to screen time and its impact on mental health and behavior.

She will discuss ways that parents can address screen-time issues with their children.

Supt. of Schools Thomas Scarice, in a statement announcing the program, said, “I am confident that the community is well aware of my convictions about the negative impact that smartphones and social media have had on our children, from elementary through high school.”

Scarice is advocating that a blanket ban on student cellphones be imposed at all Westport schools.

Ruston’s other film projects include Unlisted: A Story of Schizophrenia, about her father, and Hidden Pictures, about global mental health. For her work in mental-health advocacy, Ruston has won several awards, including from Harvard and Mental Health America.
