WESTPORT — School officials have postponed Monday night’s Board of Education meeting out of respect to Michael Sansur, a veteran teacher of technology classes at Staples High School, who died from injuries he suffered in a crash Saturday on Interstate 95.
Sansur, a 52-year-old resident of Darien who taught 18 years at Staples, died in a two-car crash and his 21-year-old son, also named Michael, was critically injured in the accident on I-95 in Old Lyme in eastern Connecticut.
The Board of Education session tonight was to have included a presentation on the school district’s equity study, a major initiative that has sparked controversy during previous discussions.
That meeting has now been postponed to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25.
The start of classes at Staples this morning was delayed three hours so that staff could prepare to counsel and support students reacting to the death of Sansur, who was described as an “inspirational” and “beloved” teacher by Supt. of Schools Thomas Scarice in a message Sunday.
“Any student who needs support should speak with a trusted adult in the building; any parent who believes their child needs support should let their child’s counselor or grade-level assistant principal know,” Scarice said in a message Sunday night.
