WESTPORT — The planting season has yet to begin, but the Westport Farmers Market hopes to harvest community support next month at its first “Fork It Over” fundraising event.

The event is set from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at Don Memo restaurant, 90 Post Road East.

The limited number of tickets goes on sale April 1; visit the Westport Farmers Market website on that date for purchase information.

Fork It Over is planned less than a month before the market opens May 19 for a new season.

A feature of the gathering will be an auction of “#WhoGrowsYourFood” farm photos by Anne Burmeister and Ashley Skatoff, as well as other items.

Money raised “will directly support the number of vendors we are able to invite to the market, while allowing us to reduce our operating expenses so that we can focus on our mission — encouraging a fresh, healthy and sustainable lifestyle in Westport and greater Fairfield County,” Lori Cochran-Dougall, the Westport Farmers Market executive director, said in publicity for the fundraiser.

Funds also will benefit educational programming for the market’s vendors; help to incorporate more family-focused activities throughout the year, and support philanthropic efforts aligned with the market’s mission, Cochran-Dougall said.

Those efforts, she said, include donating excess food every week to Food Rescue for distribution to area shelters; collaborating with female veterans at Homes for the Brave, and supporting Homes with Hope programs to help the hungry and the homeless.
