WESTPORT — A community salute to American veterans was carried out Saturday as a cadre of volunteers placed new flag holders with the Stars-and-Stripes at veterans’ graves in Assumption Cemetery.
Among those who participated in the grave decoration project, organized by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 399, were Scouts from Troops 39 and 139.
“Today was about recognizing our heroes and making sure their sacrifice is remembered,” Phil Delgado, quartermaster of the VFW Post, said in a statement. “This is our way of showing that their service and sacrifice are never forgotten.”
Organizers said that if any veteran graves were inadvertently missed Saturday, and loved ones would like a flag holder to be placed at the burial site, to contact Patty Kondub of the VFW Auxiliary at Nortonpk@icloud.com.
