WESTPORT — A psychologist and author who drew on personal experiences to write a book about growing up gay will speak June 27 at the Westport Library.

Alan Downs, whose appearance is co-sponsored by Westport Pride, will discuss his book, “The Velvet Rage: Overcoming the Pain of Growing Up Gay in a Straight Man’s World,” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at the library, 20 Jesup Road. To reserve free tickets in advance online, click here.

Downs, a clinical psychologist, has more than 25 years experience in the field, specializing in the psychology of gay men. He is also a dialectical behavior therapy therapist who has worked with individuals as well as therapists seeking to learn mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance skills,” according to publicity for the program.
