WESTPORT–In just over a week, the Westport Country Playhouse brings to life the Pride and Prejudice sequel you never knew you needed. Finally, Jane Austen fans and others can learn what happened to Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy and Napoleon Bonaparte.

Did we mention Napoleon Bonaparte?

He’s a big part of the tale the Playhouse will premier: Pride and Prejudice 2: Napoleon at Pemberley. Written by Ken Ludwig, the playwright behind Lend Me a Tenor and Crazy for You, the play depicts the central characters of Austen’s beloved novel enjoying their marriage, until their lives are upended by an unexpected houseguest – the fallen French emperor awaiting exile.

It plays from Oct. 20 to Nov. 7, kicking off the Playhouse’s drama season. Award-winning director-playwright Emily Mann directs.

The 1813 novel has survived many adaptations and sequels. Netflix is showing the 2016 movie Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Bollywood gave us the 2004 musical, Bride and Prejudice. Crime writer P.D. James once penned Death Comes to Pemberly, pulling the characters into a murder mystery.

But Napoleon’s entry takes the tale in a new direction.

“What an exciting way to begin a brand-new season at the Playhouse – with a world premiere that is smart, romantic, wildly funny and full of surprises!” said Mark Shanahan, the Playhouse artistic director. “With a tale only he could dream up, Ken Ludwig takes characters we think we already know and love and sends them in wonderfully unexpected new directions. With the incomparable Emily Mann at the helm and a brilliant cast taking the stage, we’re enormously proud to launch this terrific new play into the American theatre, and I can’t wait for our audiences to be the first to fall in love with it!”
