WESTPORT — Music to their ears …

That, no doubt, is the reaction by music educators in the Westport public schools that the distrtict has once again by designated one of the “Best Communities for Music Education” by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation.

Westport schools, which since 2013 have received the NAMM citation, are among 623 districts nationally to be given the designation this year.

The Best Communities for Music Education designation “is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students,” according to the announcment.

To qualify for consideraton, Westport and other school districts were asked to answer questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community programs. 

The schools’ Music Department shares relationships with, among other groups, the Westport Library, the Levitt Pavilion, PTA Cultural Arts, WestPAC and Westport Arts Advisory Committee.
