WESTPORT — “United Against Hate,” a program slated March 28 at the Westport Library, is likely to resonate in a community where a rash of racist and white-supremacist graffiti has vandalized public sites over the last few months.

The program, set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, will feature remarks by Vanessa Roberts Avery, the U.S. attorney for Connecticut. It will be preceded by a reception at 6 o’clock.

Fully titled, “United Against Hate: Identifying, Reporting and Preventing Hate Crimes,” the program is planned by the library in collaboration with Westport Pride, the Westport and Norwalk police chiefs and the Connecticut State Police’s recently formed Hate Crimes Unit.

In addition to Avery, representatives of law-enforcement agencies are scheduled to participate.

“As part of our commitment to enforcing federal hate crime laws, we are using the Justice Department’s United Against Hate initiative to bring together community groups, community leaders and law enforcement to educate, rebuild trust and strengthen coordination in combatting acts of hate throughout our state,” Avery said in a publicity release for the program.
