WESTPORT — The Westport Garden Club in 2024 celebrates its centennial, and what better way to mark the passage of 100 years of cultivating a beautiful Westport than a timepiece rooted in history — in other words, a sundial.
The centennial sundial, donated by the club to the town, was recently installed in Grace K. Salmon Park, off Imperial Avenue. It is engraved with a passage from Ecclesiastes, “To everything there is a season …”
Among the seven town parks that club members help maintain, Grace K. Salmon Park is particularly meaningful to the group.
Remediation of the one-time landfill began in 1970, according to the club, and following removal of debris and garbage littering the site and planting native trees, it became a town park in 1977.

Over the years, the club’s “fundraising efforts, elbow grease and partnerships throughout the town created today’s park and the club continues to maintain the gardens there,” according to the club’s announcement about the new sundial.
“A recent renovation included plantings to enhance the park as a part of Westport’s Pollinator Pathway,” the club said.
After town officials approved installation of the sundial, the project was carried out with support from Mark Bolduc of Giunta-Bolduc Mason Contractors Westport and Gault Stone and Landscaping.
Among the club’s centennial programs is the annual plant sale is planned Saturday, May 11, on Jesup Green. The event, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m, will feature a range of more than 1,000 plants, from perennial and floral varieties to vegetables, herbs and native species.
