NEW CANAAN— A new exhibition at the Silvermine Arts Center offers a celebration of both the organization and the American semiquincentennial, looking at how artists have shaped cultural identity on both a local and national level.
A Place for Artists will be on view through Aug. 20th. The exhibition features archival photographs, artwork that represents generations of Silvermine artists, and a look at the center’s current outreach and educational programs. The center was started in 1908 and organized in 1922, and features a guild of artists, art school, and galleries.
“Historically and in the contemporary art world, Silvermine has never been defined by a single style or movement,” the Silvermine Arts Center said in a statement. “A wide range of artistic styles and disciplines is on view in A Place for Artists. Realists, abstractionists, sculptors, printmakers, ceramic artists, photographers, and multimedia artists can all be found here.”
Notable highlights in the exhibition include George W. Picknell’s historic landscape painting A Bend in the Silvermine as well as work from current guild members. For more information on the exhibition, click here.
