WESTPORT–Yesterday, the fire department issued a warning about low air quality.

Vulnerable residents–children, older adults and people with heart or lung conditions–are advised to limit “prolonged outdoor exertion” with the weather system pushing air down from Canadian fires spread in a band that includes western Connecticut.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has issued an Air Quality Alert through Thursday due to elevated levels of fine particulate pollution. Forecasts indicate air quality may worsen Thursday, with conditions ranging from Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups to Unhealthy in Fairfield, New Haven, and Litchfield counties.

“Smoke from these wildfires is affecting air quality throughout our region,” said Fire Chief Nick Marsan. “We encourage residents to pay attention to how they feel, reduce outdoor activity if air quality is poor, and take extra precautions.”
