WESTPORT–A New Jersey man faces charges that he stole a check worth $12,085 from Maplewood Senior Living on Greens Farms Road and forged it in his name, Westport police said.

The financial officer for the senior living community told police in March that three checks mailed to the same vendor between October 2025 and February had been intercepted and altered to be payable to someone else, police said.

An investigation showed that one of the checks was to Tiery Mene, 25, of Rahway, N.J., according to a statement from police.

“Further investigation, including the execution of search warrants for various bank records, revealed that (a person) alleged to be Tiery Mene had deposited this check into his personal account,” police said in a statement. “Once the check cleared, Mene then made several additional payment transactions to himself and others.”

Last Thursday, Westport detectives travelled to the Union County Sheriff’s Office Division of Corrections in Elizabeth, N.J., where Mene was being held on an active warrant from Westport. Police brought Mene back to Westport and charged him with third-degree identity theft, first-degree forgery and second-degree larceny, all felonies, and unlawful possession of a personal identifying information access device, a misdemeanor.

He is being held on $50,000 bond and is due in Superior Court in Stamford on Oct. 26, court records show.
